Project Description: Balagan Theatre takes on Mary Zimmerman's Middle Eastern masterpiece. Directed by Balagan's Executive Director Jake Groshong (Big Love), the piece combines Theatre, Dance, and Music to create a work that is the epitome of an ensemble production.

A sixteen-member cast enacts Scheherazade's tales of love, lust, comedy, and dreams. Scheherazade's cliffhanger stories prevent her husband, the cruel ruler Shahryar, from murdering her, and after 1,001 nights, Shahryar is cured of his madness, and Scheherazade returns to her family. This adaptation offers a wonderful blend of the lesser-known tales from Arabian Nights with the recurring theme of how the magic of storytelling holds the power to change people. The final scene brings the audience back to a modern day Baghdad with the wail of air raid sirens threatening the rich culture and history that are embodied by these tales.

Audition Information
Audition/Interview Dates:
September 6th (Saturday): 1-6pm

Callbacks or second audition/interview?
September 7th (Sunday): 5-10pm

Audition Requirements:
Prepare a monologue 1-2 minutes in length from a modern play. Callbacks will require cold readings from the script, along with improvisation, singing, and movement.

Describe any monetary compensation:
Small Stipend.

Character Breakdown / Project Needs
10 men and 6 women playing over 50 roles. Looking specifically for the following, though all will be considered:
- those with musical abilities (Middle Eastern music preferably)
- those with movement abilities (tumbling, dance, and acrobatics)
- those with Middle Eastern, Indian, Asian, or African backgrounds.
- those with improvisation skills.
- those with the ability to play upwards of 10 roles.
- those with the desire to be part of an amazing ensemble of actors.
